AssetGen SysMap is designed to help organisations
manage change to complex services and infrastructures. Key to this
is understanding the relationships between Configuration Items (CIs)
which represent processes, services, applications and systems. It
does not require all aspects of IT to be documented before it delivers
benefits, nor set a rigid approach that creates unnecessary data
and workload on technical teams. It also suits the needs of proactive
planning and “business as usual” (BAU) operational teams. Developed
to meet best practice frameworks such as ITIL and ISO20000, AssetGen
SysMap complements monitoring systems and service desks with its
ability to manage and present complex relationships. Square Mile
Systems is the exclusive distributor for UK customers and resellers.
"Top Down" or
"Bottom Up"
AssetGen SysMap can be used
to support the different information needs of technical and service
delivery teams. If you want to understand the key services and components
that a business service depends, you would trace downwards to discover
the IT services, applications and components that the business depends
on - the "top down" approach. This is often the approach when looking
at business continuity, risk management, single points of failure,
enterprise architecture reviews etc.
If your starting point
is a server that has to be re-booted, then you probably want to
know the impact on applications, services and the business - the
"bottom up approach". In practice this is often reactive to an incident,
or focussed on a specific technical group planning a change to a
system, with speed of access and understanding being critical. Managing
a crisis is not helped if you currently have to reverse engineer
a complex system on a white board.
It seems like common sense
to have the knowledge in one place, suited to both types of requirements,
so AssetGen provides the ability to analyse CI dependencies and
impacts in different ways. With AssetGen SysMap you can;
- Map how devices, systems, applications, services and processes
interact
- Improve decision making when faced with equipment or service
failures
- Increase control over planned changes to avoid service disruption
- Enhance existing service management and monitoring toolsets
- Automate change impact analysis so it can be used by inexpert
users
- Visualise relationships across an end to end service using MS
Visio
Little
Picture, Big Picture
Each team, group or supplier
often has knowledge of their own components or service - which we
call "the little picture". The server team knows alot about the
servers, but not the databases on them, or how applications interact.
AssetGen allow the knowledge of different teams to be combined to
produce a "big picture" view that spans multiple teams and systems.
It then becomes a simple task to work out a recovery plan, or identify
single points of failure.

The first example on the
left from the database support team shows how two databases use
a common platform which is located on a server.
The
second example on the left from the server team shows that the server
is actually a virtual server, hosted
with two others
on a blade server.
The "big picture" shows them in context
